What is Kundali Matching (Guna Milan)?

Kundali Matching, also known as Guna Milan or Horoscope Matching, is an ancient Vedic astrology practice used to assess the compatibility between two individuals before marriage. It is based on the Ashtakoota system, which compares eight different aspects (kootas) of the couple's birth charts using their natal nakshatras (birth stars). The total score is out of 36 points, and a higher score indicates better compatibility.

The 8 Kootas (Ashtakoota) Explained

1. Varna (1 point): Represents spiritual and ego compatibility. The four varnas (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra) are mapped to zodiac signs. The boy's varna should ideally be equal to or higher than the girl's.

2. Vashya (2 points): Indicates mutual attraction, dominance, and control in the relationship. It is determined by the vashya category (Manava, Chatushpada, Jalchar, Keeta) of each partner's rashi.

3. Tara (3 points): Also called Dina Koota, it measures the health and well-being of the couple. It is calculated by counting from one partner's nakshatra to the other's and checking whether the resulting tara is auspicious.

4. Yoni (4 points): Represents physical and sexual compatibility. Each nakshatra is associated with an animal (yoni), and the compatibility between these animals determines the score. Enemy animal pairs score zero.

5. Graha Maitri (5 points): Evaluates mental compatibility and friendship between the couple. It is based on the planetary lords of each partner's nakshatra and their mutual friendship in Vedic astrology.

6. Gana (6 points): Assesses temperament compatibility. The three ganas are Deva (divine), Manushya (human), and Rakshasa (demon). Same-gana matches score full points, while Deva-Rakshasa combinations score the least.

7. Bhakoota (7 points): Relates to love, family welfare, and financial prosperity. It is determined by the relative positions of the couple's rashis. Certain combinations like 6/8, 2/12, and 5/9 are considered inauspicious.

8. Nadi (8 points): The most important koota, carrying the highest weight. It relates to health, genetics, and progeny. Both partners must have different nadis (Aadi, Madhya, Antya). Same nadi results in Nadi Dosha, which is considered highly inauspicious.

How to Interpret the Score

The total maximum score in Ashtakoota matching is 36 points. Here is how to interpret your result:

32-36 (Excellent): An outstanding match indicating exceptional compatibility across all areas. The couple is likely to have a very harmonious and prosperous life together.

24-32 (Good): A strong match with good overall compatibility. Minor differences can be easily managed with mutual understanding.

18-24 (Average): An acceptable match. The marriage can work well with effort, patience, and willingness to compromise from both partners.

Below 18 (Not Recommended): The compatibility is considered insufficient for marriage. It is advisable to consult an experienced Vedic astrologer for a deeper analysis and potential remedies.

What is Nadi Dosha?

Nadi Dosha occurs when both the boy and the girl have the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya). Since the Nadi koota carries the highest score (8 points), having same nadi results in zero points for this koota and significantly reduces the overall score. In Vedic astrology, Nadi Dosha is believed to cause health issues, difficulties in having children, and marital discord. However, there are specific exceptions and remedies (parihara) that an astrologer can recommend.
